Frequently Asked Questions

Q) If I am having car trouble in the morning and can’t make it to the mountain or will be late, what should I do?
A) Call (845) 254-5600 and make sure you speak to a person. Do not leave voice mail messages. If you do not speak to your Supervisor directly, make sure you get the name of the person you spoke to. Voice mail will not be checked until at least the afternoon.

Q) How do I know if I am ready to take a certification exam?
A) Taking the necessary steps to become PSIA or AASI certified requires your dedication to the process. If you have attended certification clinics and participated in study group discussions you need to see the Snowsports School Director or Technical Director for “sign-off” on your registration.

Q) Where do I get an application for taking a certification exam?
A) The Snowsports Administration Office.

Q) Where do I find a list of PSIA or AASI events being conducted in the Eastern Region?
A poster of the current event schedule is in the locker room or you can go to the PSIA-E web site at www.psia-e.org

Q) Why do I need to get my application signed before I go to an exam?
A) Each exam has certain requirements and criteria that must be met before going to an exam. It would be unfair if we let you go to an exam unprepared.

Q) If I have questions or comments regarding membership of PSIA/AASI, who should I talk to?
A) The Snowsports School Director or Chris Ericson: Director of Training, is also the designated PSIA-E Area Rep for Belleayre.

Q) If I can’t make the morning clinics, is there another time I can clinic with a Trainer?
A) Morning Clinics are the best time for many reasons. It is understandable if you can’t make all of the morning clinics, but if you are serious about improving your skills, this is the time to go. In addition, we do conduct afternoon clinics when time permits and instructors are free from teaching.

Q) What can I expect at a Level One PSIA of AASI exam?
A) If you are planning to take a Level One exam, keep in mind that the event is mainly focused on your learning experience and progress towards becoming a professional snowsports instructor. Examiners are eager to get a feel for your enthusiasm, desire to teach, and competency in skiing or snowboarding explanation. It is important to attend your exam with your homework done; reading your PSIA or AASI sport manual is a necessary preparation. Be sure that you are familiar with elementary concepts and general language appropriate for your particular discipline. Think about movement concepts and cause and effect relationships when you freeride or train with other instructors. During your Level One exam stay excited and motivated. This is your opportunity to convince your examiner that you are the proper candidate to represent their professional organization. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Always try something again if you didn't get it right the first time. Anticipate all types of conditions, and be prepared to ski or ride harder than you may have ever ridden before. If you are ready to become part of a team, help you fellow level candidates, stay positive throughout, and success will be yours!!!
